76 Grand Street, New York
Due to unforeseen circumstances with the 76 Grand Street location the Robert Lazzarini guns, knives, brass knuckles exhibition has been postponed. Please check back to the website for future date and location.
guns, knives and brass knuckles are the subjects of Robert Lazzarini’s new exhibition of wall-mounted sculptures at Deitch Projects. In the main space, Lazzarini has installed a series of distorted guns and a grouping of distorted knives and cleavers on canted gallery walls. The storefront gallery features a sculpture based on a cluster of brass knuckles mounted to a diminishing and extruding section of wall that extends into the gallery space.
Lazzarini presents us with the irresolvable object, one that defies our attempts to reconcile its form. Presented in an installation of shifting wall grounds, the installation invokes a strong physical sensation in the viewer and emphasizes the artist's interest in phenomenology and embodied vision. The viewer's visual purchase of the objects become dislocated from their own corporeal position.
As a representation of shooting, stabbing and beating, all of these actions become a direct extension of the hand and of the grasp. By implication, there is the suggestion of the intentionality of the act and the directness of the violent deed. The wear and tear that Lazzarini recreates on the objects both references the history of that specific object and signifies the presence of the user's hand.
Working with variation and repetition, Lazzarini alters his strategies for the re-representation and manipulation of these objects. guns (i-v) is a series of five varying works whereas knives and brass knuckles employ multiple elements that make up singular compositions. In select works, the artist merges multiple forms to occupy one singular space.
Lazzarini's sculpture negates the use of artistic materials by using the same materials that the original objects are made from. guns (i-v) are based on a .38 Smith and Wesson model 10 revolver and are made from blued steel and walnut grips. knives, which are based on common household knives and cleavers, are made from steel, wood and plastic. brass knuckles are made from brass. The artist exchanges material transformation for a transformation of perceptual space.
The show is an expansion of Lazzarini’s guns and knives exhibition presented at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum last spring. This is Robert Lazzarini’s second solo exhibition at Deitch Projects.
