76 Grand Street, New York
Jocelyn Taylor’s video installation and performance Alien at Rest, featured a triad of large-scale video projections that visually connected movement and stasis as well as vulnerability and power. Taylor’s naked body was seen propelled through the streets of New York as a highly charged and kinetic presence. Dynamism was juxtaposed with a complete shutdown of bodily functions. The artist seemed to be “resting” in an unresolved state underwater or dead- a static image of restraint and finality. Taylor’s imagery is compelling and daring. A self-taught video artist, her aim is to claim new territories for a public discussion on taboos related to the black female nude. The work was accompanied by a sound installation that was recorded live on the opening night of the exhibition.
